Insulation Materials

Technical Information

Norm IRAM 2307
Insulation is the thermo-plastic material which insulates the conductor electrically ; it is the barrier impeding the conductors to produce shortcuts and having as main characteristic not having conductive properties (dielectric material ), of minimum width. There are a great variety of insulation materials: PVC (polyvinyl chloride), polythene, rubber, PTFE, polypropylene, etc, each one of these groups are sub-divided in others that, with the additives, enhance their quality and offer certain characteristic, such as: fire- UV rays-hydrocarbons-high temperatures, etc.

Insulation material and/or external jacket choice

The election will be based on installation and cable operation demands. Following, we list the qualities we can request in a cable:

• Fire resistant IEC 60331-2-1.
• No flame-spread IRAM 2289 Cat C IEC 60332-3.
• High temperatures resistance.
• Of low dielectric constant.
• Highly insulating.
• Impermeable.
• Hydrocarbon resistant.
• Flexible.
• UV rays resistant (UV).
• No emitting toxic and/or corrosive gases when burnt IRAM 60754-1-2-1/ IEC 61034 NES 713- CEI 20-37.
• No emitting smoke (smoke transparency) IRAM 60754-1-2-1/ IEC 61034 NES 713- CEI 20-37.
• Low emission of toxic and/or corrosive gases when burnt.
• Different service temperatures (75 °C / 90 °C / 105 °C).

Principal tests that insulators must accomplish:
• Width, final and centred diameter.
• Break enlarging and charge.
• Insulation or volumetric resistivity resistance.
• Chemical Resistance.
